Murderer manhunt shook up La Conner
In quiet La Conner, where barking dogs make crime news, residents were astounded to see a law enforcement blitz.
For an hour on Monday, the streets appeared to be swarming with police, assault rifles at the ready, while a low-flying Blackhawk helicopter circled overhead.
Residents were ordered to stay inside with the doors locked. Late Monday afternoon, the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office got a credible tip from Island County Sheriff’s Office that a murder suspect was on his way to La Conner to kill his mother. Scroll down past sports  for more pictures of the law enforcement operation in La Conner.

Agencies to discuss fire authority

Officials from five fire agencies will meet on Thursday to discuss the possibility of forming a single fire authority that would cover La Conner, Swinomish, Anacortes and Guemes Island.
Fire District 13 Chief Roy Horn said his district, which covers Shelter Bay, Swinomish and unincorporated areas around La Conner is hosting the meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday at the fire station on Snee Oosh Road.

Election season again ... Lively letters, dueling editorials in today's paper.

From Police Blotter:
11:52 p.m.: Malicious mischief – There was a report of kids at a party at the Swinomish Yacht Club in La Conner pushing dock carts into the channel. Deputies contacted the people, but they claimed to know nothing of the incident and did not want to talk to law enforcement.

FOOTBALL
The football team hit the road on Friday, Sept. 30 to play Tacoma Baptist.  Tacoma won the game 34-13. “We got off to a great start,” Coach Johnny Lee said. “We got off the bus ready to play, and the kids played relatively well throughout the first half.”  The score at halftime was 14-6 with Tacoma in the lead. Nonetheless, “I feel we had outplayed them to that point.” Lee said Tacoma Baptist had two big plays: a 70 yard pass for a touchdown and later a 53 yard run for another touchdown. “That really killed us in the first half,” Lee said, but “the second half was a different story.”  The team was down defensively, Coach reports, which allowed Tacoma to take advantage of some opportunities.
Lee said the team played “with great effort, and battled through some adversity.”  The team will be working on its offense and defense, Lee said, “to give ourselves a chance to win.”
Team highlights: Sean Hulbert scored on an 8 yard run in the first half; Dahlton Zavala scored on a 5 yard run late in the game; Taylor Swanson added the extra point after Zavala’s touchdown.
Sophomore Skylar Krueger was injured during the Tacoma Baptist game, and was taken to the local hospital and checked for spinal and head injuries. Thankfully “he checked out fine,” Lee said on Monday. Krueger suffer from a concussion, neck strain, and an injured wrist. “We’re glad that Skylar is just fine and relatively healthy considering all that happened Friday night.”
VOLLEYBALL
The girls played the Lynden Lions on Wednesday, Sept. 28, beating the 2A league team with three wins out of five (22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 15-12). “It was a two hour long battle and the scores went back and forth.  We had very evenly matched teams and we just handled the pressure down the stretch and kept our composure to get the win,” Coach Suzanne Marble said. “It was a great team effort and I am very pleased with the way we played all around tonight.” Game highlights: Kelley McClung, 41 assists; Emily Anderson, 15 kills, 4 aces and 3 blocks; Priscilla Ponce-Venegas, 17 kills, 3 aces and 26 digs; Katie McKnight, 12 kills; Carly Anderson, 21 digs.
The girls hosted Friday Harbor on Thursday, Sept. 29. “Playing back-to-back nights is always tough,” Coach Marble said. “It took us a while to put things together in the first set, but we picked up momentum as the match progressed.”  The Braves came from behind to win in three matches (25-11, 25-14, 25-16). Team highlights: Kelley McClung had 22 assists, 3 aces; Emily Anderson was 22 for 22 hitting with 15 kills, 5 aces and 3 blocks; Priscilla Ponce-Venegas had 6 kills and 12 digs; Carly Anderson, 12 digs.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys played Cedar Park at Mountlake Terrace on Tuesday, Sept. 27 and won 3-1. Brave goals came from Kory Duran, who scored in the 3rd minute, Jamall James, who scored in the tenth minute, and Todd Hoagland who scored in the 63rd minute. “This was our third league game so the results were even more important,” Coach Steve DeLeon said. “Cedar Park played well, but our two early goals kept us in control most of the match.”
The boys’ soccer team travels to Orcas Island on Friday, Oct. 7 and then will host Lopez Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3:30 p.m. They then will tackle league-leading Shoreline Christian at home, Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The girls played a non-league game away against Concrete Monday, Sept. 26. The Braves won the game 4-1.  “It was a good game in that our players who don’t usually get a lot of playing time all played the entire game,” said Coach Amy Freeto. Sophomore Kirstyn Bell and freshman Isis Gamble each scored for the Braves during regular play, and sophomore Lauren Reynolds played her first full game as keeper.
The game went into overtime with a 0-0 score, and ended in a shootout.  “In order to prepare for post season play we put in our usual lineup and goalie in for the shootout,” Freeto said. The four shootout goals were scored by Ashlyn Reinstra, Nikki Finley, Taylor Edwards and Kirstyn Bell, and gave the Braves the 1-0 win.
The girls hosted Friday Harbor Thursday, Sept. 29. “Friday Harbor is always a good game, and they are our league nemesis,” Coach Freeto said. “We scored early in the game, with a goal by Kelsey Crawford, but it was not our best possession game this season. Both teams were playing a lot of kick ball and were unable to control the game for any length of time.”
The Wolverines scored in the final 2 minutes of the game, sending the Braves into overtime. “Friday Harbor came out strong and overpowered us with an offensive push that we couldn't contain.” Friday Harbor scored with a shot inside the 18 yard box, giving them the win and first place in the league, Freeto said. The girls travel to Concrete on Oct. 6, and then host Sedro Woolley on Monday Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
WIAA CLASSIFICATION
Every two years, the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association assesses high school enrollment across the state to make sure each school competes at an even level with other schools of similar size.  “La Conner is smack dab in the middle of 2B classification,” Athletic Director Peg Seeling said at the September board meeting. Details will be released “soon” from the WIAA, but Seeling expects that the public schools La Conner currently competes against will remain unchanged. However, some of the private schools may or may not be reclassified due to changing enrollment.

La Conner's scary afternoon...

Officers from seven law enforcement agencies coordinated by the Skagit County Sheriff's Office swept into La Conner late Monday and locked down the town for an hour while they swept through the streets on foot with assault rifles at the ready looking for a murder suspect authorities say had just killed two people in Oak Harbor. A Blackhawk helicopter hoovered overhead with its infrared trained on areas of thick vegetation that could have concealed a suspect. The blitz was called off when the man was arrested in Island County. In the meantime, residents were told to stay indoors. But La Conner, an artist community, is home to photographers whose instincts make them run for a camera while others run for cover. Here's what happened inside La Conner on Monday:

The lights went out

This tree fell out of Pioneer Park and across Sherman Street onto a house. Power lines caught it on the way down, and through a pole snapped the tree did not crash all the way to the ground.

Puget Sound Energy crews worked all night to remove the tree and restore power, which was out from 9 p.m. Sunday, when the tree fell, to about 8 a.m. Monday.

When the sun came up... the roof had a hole.  When the tree fell, the residents were at home, in the living room right under where the tree landed.  Their scary experience is in today's paper.

Something flushed to something lush
Writer Sue Phillips has the scoop on the town's composting facility -- which essentially makes economical use of leftovers at the wastewater treatment plant. Read about the town's work to make the operation more friendly to noses and the environment in today's paper.

And speaking of Sue, who is also our Plant Lady, read her piece about the three kinds of blackberries ripe right now on fences and vacant lots all over the county.

Jim Smith is back this week in fine form, with notes from Pull-and-be-Damned. He wrote a whole column about "nothing." If you need a day-brightener this is one to read.

We also bring you the obligatory election stuff. This week we wade through another political quagmire to explain Fire District 13's contested commissioner race.

From the Police Blotter:
8:38 a.m.: Trespassing – The property manager of the businesses on Morris Street where the boat had been left in the parking lot reported that the boat owner was living in the boat. The property manger threatened to have the boat towed and impounded, and the boat owner moved it....Yep, a live-aboard moored in the Station House parking lot.

Go get the paper at the drug store, either gas station, the produce market where you can eat lunch outside on the waterfront, bookstore which has great coffee or at the liquor store. Or in our office. Or feed 3 quarters into one of our news stands and let us know if it works!

BOYS’ SOCCER

The boys’ soccer team went to Lopez Island to take on the 1A League Lopez Lobos Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Braves won 11-2. Todd Hoagland scored a whopping eight goals during the game in minutes 15, 50, 55, 57, 68, 69, 70, and 75, and was honored as the “man of the match.” Tyler Baker scored in the 28th minute, and provided two assists, and Jamall James scored in the 78th minute and provided one assist.

Coach Steve DeLeon said in the first half, the Lobos gave the Braves “a bit of trouble…they scored first, and the halftime score was 2-1. After halftime talk, where everyone realized that the Braves needed to step things up, the floodgates opened.”

DeLeon made note of Hoagland’s amazing performance, but also wanted to recognize Jamall James and Tyler Baker for their impressive game.

The team played again on Thursday, Sept., 22 at home. The Braves beat the Orcas Island Vikings 5-1. “Todd Hoagland was again the catalyst,” DeLeon said. “His two goals and two assists helped the Braves cruise past the Vikings.”

Hoagland wasn’t the only outstanding athlete. “Tanner Cyr and Spencer Finley were rock solid in defense,” DeLeon said. “Cyr even snagged a rare goal from a header.” Also mentioned for “great shifts in the midfield” are juniors Joe Lee, Dylan Sicklesteel and Taylor Fay.

Scoring for La Conner were Todd Hoagland assisted by freshman Hayden Schmidt in minute 8, and also a solo in minute 10; Eric Reinstra assisted by Hoagland in minute 14; Tanner Cyr, minute 63; and Joseph Lee assisted by Dylan Sicklesteel in the 70th minute. The score at halftime was 3-0.

The Braves played away at Shoreline on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Crusaders walked away with a 2-0 win and first place in league. Shoreline Christian has won both of their league games; La Conner has won one out of two games. Overall, the Braves have won five and lost two; Shoreline has won four and lost two.

Todd Hoagland was selected for “team of the week” by Washington Soccer Central. The organization honors what it deems to be the best athletes in the 2B League statewide. Hoagland continues to lead 2B League in goals, but by a much larger margin this week. He has racked up 17 goals. Second place is held by Mark Phillips of Bear Creek, with 13 goals.

VOLLEYBALL

The girls played a quick three match for the win on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at home. The Braves won in 3: 25-8; 25-10; 25-4. Kelley McClung had 19 assists and 5 aces; Emily Anderson had 7 kills; Emma Christianson had 14 aces; and Katie McKnight had 16 aces and 4 kills.

“It was a match where we worked hard to keep the momentum on our side,” Coach Suzanne Marble said. “We took care of the little things, and everyone did a nice job for us tonight. Concrete had a tough time with Emma and Katie's tough serving.”

The girls left for Longview to take part in the annual Mark Morris High School Tournament. The girls competed among 16 teams across all league divisions, and took fifth place. Coach Marble said the girls won their competition in the morning, then beat 2A League Black Hills (25-23, 25-20), 2A League Sequim (25-13, 25-23), split the match with 3A League Kelso (25-15, 14-21) and made their way into the Gold Division bracket.

In the Gold Division, the Braves played 2A League North Thurston, beating the much larger school two out of three (22-25, 26-24, 15-11), and next played 2A League Mark Morris. The tournament hosts won the match in 2 (15-25, 22-25). The Braves then played 3A League Timberline in what Marble called a “great battle.” Timberline won in two very close games (24-26, 26-24. 13-15).

“We had a great day overall and played some really tough competition,” Marble said. “We had the opportunity to play much bigger schools all day, and the girls played tough and never gave up. We played six matches and got a ton of experience, and I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.”

Tournament highlights: Kelley McClung had 94 assists, 5 aces and 5 kills; Emily Anderson had 30 kills, 7 aces and 4 blocks; Priscilla Ponce-Venegas had 5 aces, 52 digs and 56 kills; Emma Christianson had 48 digs, 10 aces; Katie McKnight had 10 aces; and Carly Anderson had 47 digs.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

The girls hosted Concrete Tuesday, Sept. 20, walloping the Lions 8-0. Scoring for the Braves were Kelsie Crawford, 3 goals; Madi Cavanaugh, 2; Ashlyn Reinstra, 1; Kirstyn Bell 1; Tessa Bruland, 1.

“We played well in this game with great passing and team-work,” said Coach Amy Freeto. “ Everyone got to have ample time on the field. People like Nikki Finley, Sammie Mesman and Tessa Bruland were able to put goals in the back of the net. These players do a lot of work on the field to set up other goals, like Nikki, and protect our goals, like Sammie and Tessa, so it's great to see them get the glory of putting the ball in the back of the net.”

The team played an away game against University Prep Wednesday, Sept. 21. The teams tied 1-1. Coach Freeto said she is more proud of this match than “the others where we’ve blown teams away,” because “U-prep came out fast and furious, and we made some very quick, very different adjustments to our formation.” Freeto pulled a midfielder back to defense and put senior Bailey Cunningham out of her normal defensive position.

Freeto has glowing praise for Cunningham’s response to the switch by “man-marking” U-Prep’s striking forward. “Bailey has proven herself in the past two seasons to be able to shut down some of our state’s top forwards; she once again frustrated and frazzled their fast, speedy and powerful offense-so much so, that the one goal they scored was from a defender.”

The goal happened “unmarked” from the backfield, because Cunningham and the rest of the defense had their offense shut down.

U-Prep had 26 attempts on a goal to La Conner’s six attempts, with keeper Tessa Bruland “coming out with 21 glorious saves,” Freeto said. “Ashlyn Reinstra and Sammie Mesman controlled the midfield and defense and kept everything in place for us.”

Kirstyn Bell was brought in because “we knew she was the only one with the speed to do what we needed her to do--play two positions at once,” Freeto said. “Bell did such a great job, she provided an assist to Kelsie Crawford on the team’s only goal.”

The team played the 3A League Sedro-Woolley JV on Saturday, Sept. 24 and won 4-1. Scorers were Nikki Finley with 2 assists, Sammie Mesman, Ashlyn Reinstra and Kelsie Crawford.

“A team goal of ours has been to be more effective scoring and defending cornersand we are succeeding in this goal early,” said Freeto. “We let in a goal off a well-placed free kick.”

FOOTBALL

The Braves have gone down in history as the first team to beat the Bellevue Christian Vikings. The team was undefeated before arriving in La Conner. The Braves won 39-24.

At first, the game looked iffy for the Braves, as the Vikings scored a touchdown right away. The first quarter ended with the Vikings up 10-7 over the Braves.

Touchdowns were scored by Landy James on a punt return; Skylar Krueger, two running touchdowns; and Dahlton Zavala, two running touchdowns. Extra points were kicked by freshmen and first year kicker, Taylor Swanson.

“I was specifically proud of the way we bounced back from a tough loss at Adna the week before,” Coach Lee said. “Our offensive line was determined to win the line of scrimmage and play physical. I also felt the backs and receivers did a great job of taking advantage of the opportunities they were given.”

“We are going to be a much improved team moving forward if we can continually maintain everything we fixed going into the Bellevue Christian game,” said Coach Lee. “The staff was more than satisfied with the effort and the courage the kids played with last Friday night.”

He specifically noticed the team is improving in defensive take-aways. “We had two interceptions and a caused fumble that really put us into good positions to score,” he said. “The defense gave up 10 points only, which we really needed, having surrendered 44 and 40 points to our last two opponents.”

He sees plenty of improvement in the sophomore athletes. “Although they are young, their improvement so far has been a great thing to see,” he said.

Coach Lee has selected Skylar Krueger as player of the week.
