La Conner loves Halloween!

Watch out for this guy on Halloween night. He jumps from roof to roof in La Conner and is described as black, furry, is known to purr and has a record of shredding trick-or-treat bags in search of canned tuna. – Photo by Don Coyote

And don't forget the Zombie Walk at Gilkey Square at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27 with Warm Bodies author Isaac Marion.

Two parties for kids on Halloween:
Community Halloween in the haunted old school gym 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday.
That one is followed by the fun Halloween Party at the Swinomish Youth Center 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

And, there really is some news:
La Conner is the new home of a boat builder who moved here this week from Bellingham. Mavrik Marine, builder of welded aluminum commercial boats, has leased the Port of Skagit's new building on North 3rd. Street at La Conner Marina. Read about them in today's paper.

This week's Police Blotter has proof you can get arrested for driving on a suspended license while
walking.
8:38 p.m.: Gotcha – While on patrol, a deputy observed someone whom he recognized as having an outstanding arrest warrant walking along Morris Street in La Conner. The person was arrested for an outstanding warrant for driving with a suspended license.

Our award winning columnists are VERY entertaining today -- Jim Smith boils down all the election season political issues of the town; Mickey Bambrick had Norwegian guests who thought a tour of New York City would be a day trip from La Conner and Mel Damski is just plain unhinged -- he's talking about zombies en-route from Sedro-Woolley to La Conner.

Lady Braves clinch co-league soccer title
By M. Sharon Baker
The La Conner girls’ soccer team clinched the league title Monday with a 2-1 win over Friday Harbor. The victory comes on the heels of Saturday’s 4-2 non-league win over Napavine, which they could face in state playoffs.
The Friday Harbor game capped off a 11-2-2 season and gives the Braves their first league championship in four years. Coach Amy Freeto expected a lot from this year’s squad, which is largely the same team from 2010.
“We’ve been to the state tournament in the last eight years and coming in I knew we could advance to the state finals,” she said.  In 2009, the team finished fourth in the state
The Braves lost four seniors last year including center midfielder Sydney Hartwick, a high impact player. “This year we have a core group of juniors and we’re not just relying on one or two players,” Freeto said. “This team is strong.” The core group includes senior Nikki Finley, and juniors Kelsie Crawford, Ashlyn Reinstra, Madi Cavanaugh and Sammie Mesman, as well as sophomore goalie Tess Bruland.
Crawford, a forward, notched the game winner Monday, which brought her goal tally to 20 this season. She’s the county’s leading goal scorer.
Sweeper Mesman put the Braves on the board in the first half of the Friday Harbor game after driving home a cross from Finley. The team took at 1-0 lead into half-time, but Friday Harbor stole the games’ momentum with a tying goal just two minutes into the second half.
Friday Harbor made a good effort to score a go-ahead goal, pressing La Conner for a full 15 minutes. La Conner found its second wind and began to push forward generating several shots on goal. The Braves were rewarded when Crawford found the back of the net with just four minutes left in the game.
“It feels good,” said Freeto after the game. “Friday Harbor has been our nemesis and it came down to our last game this season. This win puts us where we want to be.”
The win gave the Braves the co-league title, which they share with 1A Friday Harbor, and the No. 1 2B seed going into the Bi-District tournament. If all goes as planned, a district title could put them in position to face Napavine in the state finals, a team they just beat 4-2 on Saturday.
“Napavine has come in second in states for the past three years,” Freeto said. “We’ve never had the opportunity to play against them or to gauge ourselves against them until now. It was good to come out with a win.”

BRAVES #1 SEED
The boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and volleyball teams have each finished the regular season as the #1 seed going in to district competition. Football is still has two league contests, one against Darrington and the other against Orcas Island.
For teams now entering district tournament play, Athletic Director Peg Seeling wants to remind fans that playoff tickets are $6 for adults, and $4 for senior citizens and students with ASB cards in hand.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
The girls’ soccer team beat Orcas Island high school 2-1 on Thursday, Oct. 20. “We hadn’t played since our Sedro Woolley win ten days ago, and the extended break hurt us,” said Coach Amy Freeto, “It was a close game.”  Earlier in the season, the Braves beat Orcas Island 5-0.
The girls played Napavine on Saturday, Oct. 22, and came away with a 4-2 win. “The game was easier than we expected,” said Freeto. “We mentally prepared well for this game, and each player put their best game on the field.” Ashlyn Reinstra scored the first two Brave goals, and Kelsie Crawford and Nikki Finley added goals in the second half. “We had control of the game, which was great for our confidence and as a rebound from our long break and a subpar game against Orcas,” Freeto said.
With the 2-1 win over Friday Harbor, the Braves now move into Bi-District play, with the team set to play at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3 at Sammamish High School, according to Seeling.
FOOTBALL
On Friday, Oct. 21, the Braves beat the Concrete Lions 40-12. “It was a huge win for our guys and a great win for the program,” said Coach Johnny Lee, “It’s hard to express how proud of this group I am. They came out ready to play in a huge game atmosphere – essentially a playoff game – and performed great.”
Braves touchdowns were scored by Dahlton Zavala with 2 rushes; Skylar Krueger with 1 rush, Bobby Poulton with 1 reception; and Landy James with 2 receptions. The win was “more than any individual effort; it was the most complete team effort we’ve had this  year,” Lee said, “Our offense was up over 630 yards and our defense held the Lions to under 200 yards.” The team now needs to win one of their two remaining games to earn a bearth into the playoffs. “We’re looking to win both and not leave things to chance,” Lee said.
The Braves play the Loggers in Darrington on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. and the final game is at home on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 5:30. Seniors will be honored at the Orcas game.
VOLLEYBALL
The girls played Mount Vernon Christian in Hurricane territory on Tuesday, Oct. 18 and won the match in three games (25-8; 25-13; 25-11).  Team highlights: Kelley McClung had 28 assists; Emily Anderson had 12 kills and 4 aces; Priscilla Ponce-Venegas had 8 kills; and Aubrey Stewart had 5 kills.  “We started the match in control and didn't let up in the next two sets,” said Coach Suzanne Marble, “I was proud of the way our girls kept their composure and focused on our side of the court.”
The Braves beat Orcas Island on Oct. 20, winning the game in three matches (25-9; 25-18; 25-12). Team highlights: Kelley McClung had 25 assists and 3 kills; Priscilla Ponce-Venegas had 6 aces and 12 kills; and Emily Anderson “was tough serving from the line with 15 for 15 and 8 aces,” Marble said. “Kelley did a really nice job of leading our offense tonight. She was a strong part of our offense with 3 kills and really did a good job of mixing up our hitters tonight.”
The team now moves into district playoffs as the No. 1 seed from the north division.  The Braves play Saturday, Oct. 29 against the Hurricanes at the Mount Vernon Christian campus at noon.  Their first Bi-district game will take place on Saturday, Nov. 5, in Stanwood, but the time has yet to be determined.
BOYS’ SOCCER
The boys beat Mount Vernon Christian in a close game at home on Oct. 20, with a 3-2 win, and enter Bi-District play this Thursday. Scoring for the Braves in the win were Hayden Schmidt, Tyler Baker and Todd Hoagland. The boys ended the regular season as league champions after top ranked Shoreline Christian lost last week. Overall, the Braves’ record is 12-3.
Seeling says it is still unclear whether the boys will play the District 1 game at 1 p.m. in La Conner on Thursday, Oct. 27, or at Grace Academy at 6:30 p.m.

La Conner’s murder mystery on TV
La Conner was featured in a segment of the Washington’s Most Wanted television show as retired Skagit County Sheriff's Detective Bob Smith who works "cold cases" picks through the evidence on a murder that occurred in the Pier 7 building 18 years ago.
He’s working to find out who killed Donna Arrasmith, a 52-year-old woman who was stabbed to death on Monday, July 26, 1993 in a gift shop in the Pier 7 building on South First Street.
Filming the segment at the Pier 7 building were Walker Anderson on the camera, show correspondent Parella Lewis and Detective Smith.   Click   Here to see the the show.

La Conner has the fastest deputy on two wheels or on two feet. Skagit County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Wade was in Spain recently to compete in the International Triathlon Union Duathlon World Championships in Gijon, Spain. He and his wife, Becky, both competed. See their story in today's paper.

Fruit & Produce Market closing
One of the town’s most popular gathering spots for locals and tourists will close for good on Sunday.
La Conner Fruit & Produce Market on South First Street, a regular spot for morning coffee-klatches and hearty lunches overlooking the waterfront, will be another vacant building on First Street.
In April, Wells Fargo Bank foreclosed on the property and took ownership of it. Now the bank wants the owners to vacate.  A lot of people in town are grieving the loss....

Addie Wigal and Hayden Purdue, both 4-year-old La Conner Co-op Preschool students are among the young artists preparing for the school's annual art show, coming up during Arts Alive! weekend. See Katie Wigal's story in today's paper.

 From the Police Blotter:
8:54 a.m.: Missing Tree – The La Conner Public Works crew, which had scheduled an autopsy on a downed tree in the 300 block of Sherman Avenue and Park Street, reported that someone had taken their large tree. The town had hired an arborist to examine the tree to determine if other trees were at risk for falling and posed a risk to the public. Luckily, deputies investigated and found the tree thief, who unfortunately had cut off limbs and removed a good portion before the autopsy. The case was resolved without any criminal charges, however, deputies want you to know that it is unlawful to remove trees, downed or otherwise without permission of Public Works. Honest, we don't make this stuff up!

Inside see Mel Damski, the award winning Jim Smith and award winning Mickey Bambrick and more entertaining cop calls. Pick up the paper at either gas station, book store, produce market, liquor store and drug store or feed quarters into one of the red news racks and let us know if it doesn't work.

HOME GAMES
The athletic regular season is winding down; Thursday, Oct. 20 is senior recognition night for volleyball, boys’ soccer and girls’ soccer. Volleyball celebrates at 4:30 p.m. during the varsity game against Orcas Island. The girls’ soccer team plays Orcas Island at 3:30 p.m. and boys face Mount Vernon Christian at 6:30 p.m.
The girls’ volleyball team invites fans to join them and “Dig Pink” on senior night. Dig Pink is a campaign by the Side-Out Foundation in 2004 originally created to unite volleyball players and coaches to raise breast cancer awareness.
The soccer teams will play their final home games this week. The girls face Orcas Island Thursday, and then take on Napavine at home on Saturday. Napavine has been the state’s 2B second place team for three straight years, and should give the girls a “good gauge of where we are compared to our top state teams and those we’ll be facing in the state tournament,” said Coach Amy Freeto.
VOLLEYBALL
The girls played Darrington on Logger turf on Tuesday, Oct. 11, beating the Loggers in 4 games for the match (25-9, 17-25, 25-15, 25-20).  Both teams went into the match undefeated with 7-0 records. “It was a fun match-up of two undefeated teams,” said Coach Suzanne Marble. “We had to change our line-up due to an injury and the girls handled themselves with poise. I was very proud of how they adjusted to the new line-up.” “We were tough from the serving line tonight and Kelley McClung did a nice job of mixing up the offense from start to finish,” Marble added.
Team highlight: Kelley McClung had 35 assists, 5 aces and 4 blocks; Emily Anderson had 24 kills and 3 aces; Priscilla Ponce-Venegas had 14 kills, 25 digs and 2 blocks; and Katie McKnight had 6 kills and 3 aces.
The girls played Shoreline Christian Thursday, Oct. 13, and beat Shoreline in 3 games for the match (25-12, 25-21, 25-16).
Coach Marble said the Crusaders were “fired up,” while the Braves started out “a little flat,” allowing Shoreline to take the lead early in the game. “We made too many service errors and hitting errors in set two and allowed Shoreline Christian to get the momentum,” she said. “We know we have to come mentally and physically prepared for each match and not have any let up.”
Team highlights: Kelley McClung had 29 assists and 5 aces; Emily Anderson had 9 kills and 3 aces; Priscilla Ponce-Venegas had 9 kills and 2 aces; Carly Anderson had 15 digs; Katie McKnight had 6 kills and 4 aces; and Aubrey Stewart had 5 kills.
FOOTBALL
The Braves ended Homecoming Week with a bang, beating Chief Leshi 60-0. “The kids played with pride and I felt served the purpose of homecoming with their effort,” Coach Johnny Lee said. Lee credits the younger team members who had playing time in the second half with a large responsibility for the win. “Our offensive line produced better than they ever had,” Lee said, and noted the play of William Zeimantz, Harrison McGaughey, Rafael Ponce-Venegas, Jonathon O’Brien and Robert Duckworth. Lee also noted the “play making ability” of Trey Johnson and Matt Finley.
The team has “improved in our execution on offense and defense,” Lee said. “We have also developed an identity as a team that likes to pound the football with the run game, and a stout defense that is pretty opportunistic in taking advantage of our opponent’s mistakes. We are definitely looking forward to next week’s game against Concrete.”  That game will be an away game on Friday, Oct. 21, starting at 7 p.m.
Team touchdowns: Landy James by reception, punt return and interception return; Dahlton Zavala, 2 rushing touchdowns;  Bobby Poulton, 2 receptions; Matt Finley, rushing; and Keith Aske, 1 receiving.
GIRLS SOCCER
La Conner’s six-year losing streak to the 3A league Sedro Woolley varsity soccer team has come to an end; the Braves beat the Cubs for the first time in Braves’ program history with a 3-2 win. “They are very competitive against teams like Mount Vernon, Anacortes, Bellingham, and tied 4A Squalicum this season,” Coach Amy Freeto said. “We are very proud of this milestone win.”
The soccer team changed their formation for the game, moving forward Kelsey Crawford back to defense to “assess where Sedro Woolley was and not give up any early goals, which is traditionally how our games against Sedro have gone,” Freeto said.
This left the team with one forward, Nikki Finley, who quickly gave the Braves a 2-0 lead in the game’s first four minutes.  The Cubs brought the score to 2-1 at halftime, and then tied the game 10 minutes into the second half.  Maddie Cavanaugh scored the winning goal with 15 minutes left to play. The game was Cavanaugh’s first full game after recovering from an injury earlier this season. The win is “just what we needed to propel us into the last week of the regular season,” Freeto said. After facing Napavine on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at home, they face rival Friday Harbor Monday, Oct. 24. At stake in Friday Harbor is bragging rights as League Champion.
BOYS SOCCER
The boys took on Shoreline and Cedar Park last week, earning a shoot-out win against league leading Shoreline and then coming-from-behind to win against Cedar Park. “It was a week of games that was not for the faint-hearted Braves fan,” said Coach Steve DeLeon. “Both games were full of excitement and action.”
The game against the Shoreline Crusaders on Tuesday, Oct. 11 finished in a 2-2 tie with goals chipped in by Hayden Schmidt and Kory Duran, and went into a scoreless double-overtime.  The Braves pulled out the win when Todd Hoagland, Jamall James and Schmidt converted on their penalty kicks, and the Crusaders missed several of theirs. “Goalkeeper Erick Reinstra gave us an advantage when he saved two of Shoreline Christian’s penalty kicks,” DeLeon said.
On Friday, Oct. 14, the Braves pulled out a late 4-3 win against Cedar Park after being down 3-1.
The game was a tough one, DeLeon said. The team had trouble and suffered from “confusion” on defense which led to three Cedar Park goals in the first half. The Braves got on the board in the first half with an early goal by Hayden Schmidt.
Senior captain Todd Hoagland scored three unassisted goals in the second half to give the Braves the win. DeLeon credited “several teammates who stepped up and helped rally the team” including: Tanner Cyr, who “overcame some first half jitters to shut down the Cedar Park attack in the second half;  Joe Lee, Mitchell Roth and Jamall James, who took control of the midfield; and forwards Kory Duran, Luis Fernandez  and Dylan Sicklesteel.”

Election season
This is an issue for political junkies -- the paper is all election stuff with a bunch of letters to the editor alleging immoral behavior by just about everyone and profiles of the La Conner Town Council candidates and the Mayor's race. You have to be a political junkie or really, really bored to read this stuff.

Thank goodness we have this...
Harry Heron by Don Coyote
Harry is running for Port Commissioner Piling 1. Nobody knows the waterfront like Harry. He promises to work a leg off to bring back the native smelt runs, enforce the no wake zone, lobby to have Rainbow Bridge painted in “mossy oak camo,” make seagulls obtain panhandling licenses and to run those cormorants out of town.

Candidate Debate Oct. 19
Candidates for La Conner Mayor and Town Council are expected to provide a lively evening of political discussion starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the school auditorium.
Retiring Skagit Valley College President Dr. Gary Tollefson will moderate the debate, and residents will have an opportunity to ask questions.
Incumbents Councilman Jacques Brunisholz and Councilman Don Wright and their respective challengers, Marna Hanneman and Dan O’Donnell have agreed to participate.
Mayor Ramon Hayes and his challenger, Councilman Stuart Welch, will also face each other at the event.
The debate sponsor, La Conner Weekly News, will provide the coffee and cookies.
The La Conner School District auditorium is on North 6th Street on the oldest part of the campus. An elevator is available for those who wish to avoid the steep stairs.
Ballots will be mailed to registered voters on Oct. 19. They’ll be counted on Election Day, Nov. 8.
