Braves Raves
By Amylynn Richards
WRESTLING CHAMP
Senior Brandon Drye took second place at the recent state wrestling competition. Drye has competed at state level each of his four years, bringing home fourth place metals and one second place. He was the first-ever Brave to earn a chance to compete at state.
“Brandon is a person who really cares about his teammates and coaches, his family and his community,” said Coach Mike Compton. “He’s a true champion in our hearts.”
Earning second at state is only one of Drye’s accomplishments this past week. On Tuesday, Feb. 15, Drye was named Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) 2B Statewide Athlete of the Week, in honor of his winning his second regional championship in three first-round pins: the first in 34 seconds, the second in 1:03, and the third in 1:48 seconds.
It was the second straight week that a Brave wrestler had won that honor; junior Cameron Wischhusen was selected Tuesday, Feb. 8.
Brandon had a great career,” said Coach Compton. “To be in the finals of the state tournament is every wrestler's dream. There's a lot of disappointment in not winning the final match, but as time passes, we all come to realize that life is really about bigger things.”
Compton is already looking forward to the 2011-2012 season. “We have a group of wrestlers returning next year who have state tournament experience, and that will only help us to further our success next year. All in all, we've had a very good last three weeks, and our fans, parents, and community can once again be proud of these kids.”
ACADEMIC CHAMPS
Junior Nathan Parker was named the 1B/2B Academic State Champion for the 285 lb. weight class. Coach Mike Compton noted that Parker is only the second La Conner wrestler to earn this honor; Mike Konieczki earned the title back in 2006.
Other members of the wrestling team have also excelled academically and have earned recognition from the WIAA. Academic All State Honorable Mention Academic Awards went to: Ashley Norton in the 152 lb. class in the Girls' Division; Brandon Drye, 215 lb. class; Travis Silva, 215 lb. class; and Cameron Wischhusen in the 285 lb. division in the 1B/2B Boys' Division.  In order to be eligible, a wrestler must be a junior or a senior, must be on the varsity team with a winning record, eligible to compete in the district tournament, and keep a grade point average above 3.0.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
It was a tense week for the girls’ basketball team, thanks to last week’s loss in the first round to Tacoma Baptist, which meant that every game the girls played was a “loser-out” match.  The girls made it safely through each game, finishing up the bi-district championship with a third-place win against Tacoma Baptist.
The first game was on Tuesday, Feb against Evergreen Lutheran at Mount Vernon Christian, with the Braves winning by 10 points, 46-36. Top scorers: Priscilla Ponce-Venegas, 12; Aubrey Stewart, 9; Nikki Finley, 8; and Katie McKnight 8.  “We came out strong, played great defense and had balanced scoring,” said Coach Marla Quesnell.  The Braves brought down nearly 40 rebounds: Nikki Finley had 8; Samie Miller, 10; Aubrey Stewart, 10; and Priscilla Ponce-Venegas 10.
The girls returned to Chief Leschi on Friday, Feb. 18 to take on league rival Mount Vernon Christian, which the Braves had faced twice during the regular season in January. The Hurricanes had beaten the Braves in their first matchup 42-37 and also the second 29-23; which made this victory all the sweeter.
“This was a huge victory for my girls after losing to Mount Vernon Christian both times in the regular season,” said Coach Quesnell. High scorers for the Braves were Priscilla Ponce-Venegas, 12 points and 8 rebounds; Samie Miller, 12 points; and Aubrey Stewart added 8 points.
The third game of the week was again at Chief Leschi, against Tacoma Baptist. The Crusaders had taken the Braves down 49-41 just the week before; this was another sweet victory for the Braves with a 26-25 win over the Crusaders. “We knew if we had a strong start, we could play with them,” said Coach Quesnell. The Braves were without their point guard, Kelly McClung, due to illness, but “the girls did a great job of handling their press,” Quesnell said. “We got an early lead.”
The Braves were up 18-9 at halftime but struggled to score in the second half.  The Crusaders sunk a couple of three-pointers, and with three seconds to go, the game was tied 25-25.  The opponents fouled Aubrey Steward, who handled the pressure of a make-or-break free-throw like a pro. She sunk that ball into the basket and won the game for the Braves.
High scorers for this game were Priscilla Ponce-Venegas with 10 points, Aubrey Stewart 7, and Samie Miller 6.
“All of these games were a testament to the scrappiness of the girls,” Coach Quesnell said. “They have confidence in close games. I am thrilled with their determination; that is something that you don't coach.
The girls play North Beach high Friday, Feb. 25 at Mount Vernon High school. The winner of this game will play either Darrington or Adna on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. at Mount Vernon.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
On Tuesday, Feb. 25, the boys played in the first round of the bi-district championships at Chief Leschi. Other games in the championship were played at Mount Vernon Christian.
La Conner beat Chief Leschi 48-38. In this game, Landy James scored 16 points, Kyle McKnight 15, and DJ Carr 10.
On Saturday, Feb. 19, the Braves competed against Bear Creek. The Grizzlies won the championship 53-49. This game put the Braves in the number-two seed in the district going into the regional competition. Spencer Novak scored 14 points and Kyle McKnight scored 9. The Braves are currently 20-3 overall.
The boys will duke it out this weekend at regionals in Spokane against Napavine at 9:15 p.m. The winner of this game will begin state competition on Thursday, Mar. 3 at the Spokane Veterans  Memorial Arena at 12:15 p.m.

IN THE POKEY – Tom Jr. is not happy. Captured on Friday, he's stuck in the town turkey detention facility, where he will stay until his fugitive relatives either turn themselves in or get caught so they can go live on a Christmas tree farm.
Turkey posse nabs  one
Today's best reading is M. Sharon Baker's account of Friday's turkey chase. A posse from the town's public works department surrounded the feathered fugitives and managed to catch Tom Jr., one of the younger toms, with a dip net.
The six remaining birds scattered and the chase was on through the rugged back country of La Conner's hilltop neighborhood!  It ended when a turkey sympathizer called a halt to the pursuit through his property.

The new pavilion
On Tuesday the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community broke ground on its new park pavilion to be built near the new canoe landing under construction on the west shore of the channel. This promises to be a real treat for the eyes, with the pavilion shelters built to resemble traditional Salish cedar hats. Swinomish is preparing to welcome 220 big family canoes and an estimated 20,000 visitors for the 2011 Canoe Journey, Paddle to Swinomish. in July. Starting the construction were Tribal Chairman Brian Cladoosby and Tribal Senators Dianne Edwards, Sophie Bailey and Barb James.

The new church
The Indian Shaker Church, a Northwest Native American religion founded in the 1800s, is about to dedicate a new church in the heart of Swinomish village. Shaker Minister Joe McCoy walked writer Sue Phillips through the new church. The new building replaces the little dilapidated 1929 wood clapboard church that sits out on Reservation Road about four miles from the village.

Fire Battalion Chief fired
Details are sparse, but there is a public termination hearing at Fire District 13's Snee Oosh Road fire station at 3 p.m. next Wednesday, Feb. 23. You betcha we'll be there....
  From the Police Blotter:
11:09 p.m.: Malicious Mischief – Somebody stretched plastic wrap across both lanes on the Rainbow Bridge. Someone else came driving by and wasn't about to let a little plastic wrap get in his way, so he drove right through it. The deputy came and cleaned up all the plastic wrap that was laying on the bridge. No suspects.

Braves Raves
By Amylynn Richards
GIRLS WRESTLING
Ashley Norton (152 lbs.) became the first-ever girl to qualify for the Girls’ State Tournament during the Girls’ Regionals match in Sedro-Woolley.  She won with “an exciting pin with 3 seconds left in the Consolation Finals to place third,” said Coach Mike Compton.
WRESTLING
Senior Brandon Drye has brought home the Regional Championship first place trophy in the 215 lb. class.
As a team, the Braves finished Regionals better than they ever have in the teams’ history, earning third place on Saturday, Feb. 12.  “La Conner passed up two teams in the final two rounds, with many victories and several pins,” Coach Compton said.
Brave highlights: A first-round pin by champion Brandon Drye; 19 second pin by senior Travis Silva; Wil James came back with third place, and came back from a 0-6 down to pin his opponent in the final 26 seconds of the match; Dalton Zavala earned third place, and won a victory by pin over an opponent to whom he had lost twice in the regular season; and Nathan Parker (285) won third place.
Tacoma Baptist was first with 189 points, Concrete second with 125 points, and La Conner third with 87 points. Winlock High and Ocosta High rounded out the top five of the 15-team Regional.
The Braves are headed to the Tacoma Dome Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18 and 19, for State competition, with five wrestlers, the most La Conner has ever sent to state: Senior and Regional champion Brandon Drye (215 lbs. class), his fourth trip; Dahlton Zavala (152 lbs.); Wil James (189 lbs.); Nathan Parker (285 lbs.); and senior Ashley Norton. Alternates for state are Travis Silva, who earned fourth at regionals (215 lbs.) and Cameron Wischhusen, also fourth at regionals (285 lbs.).
Coach Compton has chosen Brandon Drye as this week’s Wrestler of the Week. Drye pinned all three opponents in the first round of each match. Cameron Wischhusen was named the WIAA / Seattle Times’ State Athlete of the Week last week, after winning District Championships (285 lbs.) Feb. 5 in Concrete. “Cameron is the perfect example of courage, character and sportsmanship and the WIAA couldn’t have selected a more deserving individual,” Compton said.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The Braves, league champions, went to Concrete Tuesday, Feb. 8 to play the final game of the regular season, beating the Lions 68-36. Team highlights: Tyler Howlett, 16 points; Mike Wilbur, 15 points; Kyle McKnight, 12 points. The boys completed the competition with a 14-0 league record, the only undefeated team in the 1A/2B Northwest League.
Due to WIAA restructuring in 2010, there is no longer a Tri-District competition. Instead, there is a Bi-District, which is comprised of Northwest and Sea-Tac leagues. The first match was Saturday, Feb. 12 at home against Mount Rainier Christian, which was the fourth seed in the Sea-Tac league. The Braves won 59-33. Kyle McKnight scored 14 points; Landy James, 9 points; and Spencer Novak scored 8 points.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The girls fought hard for their 57-51 win over the Concrete Lions Tuesday, Feb. 8, the final game of the season, which brought them 3rd place in the District and a shoot at the Bi-District championship as the #4 seed. Coach Marla Quesnell said the girls “played well and won a tight game in the final minutes. We took care of the ball when it was crucial and got a couple of key rebounds at pivotal moments.”
Team highlights: Priscilla Ponce-Venegas scored 16 points and made 17 rebounds; Samie Miller, 10 points; Nikki Finley, 10 points; and Katie McKnight; and Aubrey Stewart made 8 rebounds.
The girls played an away game against Tacoma Baptist Saturday, Feb. 12. The Crusaders won 49-41 and are on their way to regional competition.
“We struggled to score in the first quarter and had to play catch-up,” said Quesnell. The Braves nearly caught up in the second and fourth quarters “but were never able to gain the lead.”   Samie Miller scored 12 points, and Nikki Finley scored 11 points.

The skate park has wheels
A major skateboard park design company is drawing up plans for La Conner's long-awaited Skateboard Park and the project could be ready to go out to bid in a couple of weeks.  Lots of community fund-raising,  money from the town and a pledge from the Swinomish Tribe are going into this project. It's in today's paper!

BOYS’ WRESTLING
The Braves wrestlers earned third place at the Sub-Regional championship, which took place on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Concrete high school, and will be sending nine qualifiers and one alternate to Regional competition at Chief Leschi on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Congratulations to two Sub-Regional Champions, senior Brandon Drye (215 lbs.) and junior Cameron Wischhusen (285).

Coach Mike Compton said that the boys made quite an impression on Darrington’s head coach, Andy West. When West’s heavyweight fell in the match for first place to Cameron Wischhusen, Coach Compton relays, “he had nothing but praise for the La Conner wrestlers, saying he was impressed with that the team had accomplished, and that the kids came prepared to wrestle.”
GIRLS’ WRESTLING
Coach Compton is proud of the girl’s team, and made a point to praise the girls’ coach, Laura Baker-Skelton. This is only the second year for the Braves girls’ wrestling team. The girls’ team has only two wrestlers and both girls qualified for Regionals competition on Saturday, Feb. 12 at Sedro-Woolley.
“The team is 2-for-2,” Compton joked.
The girls also came prepared to wrestle on Saturday, Feb. 4. at the girls Sub-Regional Tournament at Squalicum; both Ashley Norton and Amber Drye qualified to move on to Regional competition. Ashley Norton (152) placed third and Amber Drye (160) placed fourth.
